Professional development and training

The Canberra Society of Editors runs training programs including day and half-day courses on topics such as proofreading, copyediting, web editing, on-screen editing and accessibility. Courses are run in response to demand from members, so the actual content varies from one year to the next. Join CSE today to take advantage of discounted members rates for these professional development opportunities.

Mentoring program

The Mentoring Program offers the opportunity for members of the Canberra Society of Editors to improve their editing skills with professional oversight and feedback from experienced editors across Australia. CSE members can apply for a mentorship via the Insitute of Professional Editors (IPEd). Experienced editors are also invited to apply to become mentees in the program using IPEd's online application form.

What is mentoring?

Mentoring is where one individual provides support, encouragement and advice to another, based on their knowledge and life and experience relative to the mentoring theme. It provides a two-way learning experience for both mentor and mentee, which can encourage deep satisfaction and numerous benefits in many personal, career, organisational and developmental areas.

The Mentoring Program is aimed at editors at all levels, for example:

  • editors entering the profession
  • editors preparing for accreditation
  • people returning to the profession after time off
  • editors with any level of experience who want to brush up their skills or move into a new area of editing
  • editors who have accepted a job that is outside their usual area of expertise.

The program brings benefits to the editing profession by increasing members’ skills. It alsohelps safeguard the reputation of the profession as a whole.

Are you interested in being mentored?

You can apply to be mentored if you have some editing experience and you think you would benefit from a one-to-one relationship with an experienced editor in any aspect of editing or associated business understanding. Apply for a mentorship or contact us if you have any questions.

Can you mentor someone?

If you could guide, encourage and generally oversee someone who wants to develop skills and confidence in our profession, you can apply to be a mentor using IPEd's online application form. Or contact us if you would like more information.
