Style Council 2001:From local to global English

The next STYLE COUNCIL will be held at the State Library of New South Wales, Sydney (Metcalfe Auditorium ), on 27-29 April 2001. Under the conference theme, From local to global English, the relationship of Australian English to other regional varieties will be discussed, as well as various ideas about International English. Local and niche varieties such as examination English and the language of sport will be featured, along with the influence of the internet on the use of English, and the globalisation of the publishing market.

Keynote speaker for the conference is Professor Edgar Schneider who will address issues relating to International English. See the attached draft program for more details.

Eleven previous STYLE COUNCILS have brought together editors, publishers, journalists, educators, lexicographers and representatives of government and industry, to debate issues of style and usage. They have proved their value in promoting intelligent discussion about Australian English and in shaping linguistic standards and conventions.

The attached form allows you to book for the conference. Information about a range of accommodation is also provided. Further information will be appearing on the conference’s website at: www.shirc.mg.edu.au/style/styleconf.html. Early booking is recommended. Please register by 16 March.
