About the presentation
Since IPEd’s inception, its Standards for editing practice has been a foundational document for the organisation. It sets out the knowledge and skills – the core standards – that professional editors should meet and that new editors should aspire to, and it is the basis of the accreditation exam. The standards also help training providers to devise course materials and tell employers and clients what to expect of the editors they hire.
In this session, Kerry Davies AE will present a ‘fireside chat’ about the evolution of the third edition of the standards, including the following topics:
- outline of the process, 2011–12 compared with 2021–24
- the working party
- initial submissions
- specialist reviews
- IPEd Board and Accreditation Board input
- feedback rounds
- formats.
About the presenter
Kerry Davies has been a professional editor for more than 45 years – much of it freelance – and a member of the Queensland Society of Editors (and for a time New South Wales) and IPEd since 1995. She became President of Editors Queensland in 2010, IPEd’s Queensland Councillor (later Director) in 2013 and IPEd Chair from 2015 to 2020. She still volunteers as the Queensland Branch Budget Officer and Chair of IPEd’s Pay and Conditions Standing Committee. She was the 2023 recipient of the Janet Mackenzie Medal and is also a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP, UK).
Kerry worked as facilitator for the revision of Australian standards for editing practice in 2011–12 to produce its second edition and was part of the IPEd Standards Working Group from 2021 until the launch of IPEd standards for editing practice in May 2024.
