About the course

David Gardiner will present a course on the following topic areas:
• setting up desktop production software
• XML standards, metadata and quality assurance
• converting content to XML markup
• editing and formatting text and lists
• transforming XML to PDF
• applying processing instructions
• authoring with ‘track changes’ and differencing files
• marking up and styling tables and graphics
• structuring chapters and modifying stylesheets for document layout.

Morning and afternoon refreshments and a light lunch are included.

Dave Gardiner is a Production Editor at Thomson Reuters and has eight years experience since qualifying in editing and publishing. He has been an in-house editor of web and print publications for Australian Government agencies, and has also gained graphic editing skills through his freelance business.

Requirements for the day:
Attendees must bring their own laptop with production software preloaded. Instructions will be available before registering for the workshop.

Course materials will be made available before the workshop and allow participants to continue learning XML markup after the course. A suite of typesetting templates and a practical user’s guide are bonus materials to help kick-start desktop production. (Note: This workshop covers only PDF output; a separate workshop is being developed for EPUB and web ebooks).

It is necessary for attendees to do the required reading and introductory exercises beforehand, (free e-book is provided when you register). This preparatory work will take a few weeks. Therefore, you must register by 24 August 2012.

Before registering, and to gain maximum benefit from the workshop, prospective participants must download and read an information sheet that covers prerequisite topics.
